Museum of Archaeology
The Museum of Archaeology of GozoThe Gozo Museum of Archaeology is one of the finest museums in Gozo that chronologically illustrates the cultural history of Gozo from the Prehistoric times to the Punic and Roman Period to early modern times. The museum is set up within a 17th century townhouse called “Casa Bondi” that has housed the museum since 1986, and is located just behind the first and original gateway to the Citadel in Rabat, Gozo. The Gozo Museum of Archaeology’s exhibition is divided into three main parts: Prehistory, the Classical period, and the Medieval and Early Modern periods. On the ground floor the exhibition is dedicated to the Neolithic Period, the Temple Period and the Bronze Age (5200–700BC) with items such as pottery vessels, stone and bone implements, other resources used by prehistoric settlers as well as findings from the Temple of Ggantija, and other settlements and tombs. Visitors are particularly invited to see several miniature clay containers and a decorated double-pot from the Bronze Age. The first floor is dedicated to the Phoenician, Punic, Roman, Medieval, and Knights’ periods and has a very interesting collection. The items are varied and include jewellery, coins, beautiful marble statues, oil lamps and terracotta cremation urns. Several inscriptions, such as the old carved Punic characters from the second century BC can be found in the exhibition and is extremely interesting to see. *Joint admission fees to Citadella Sites include The Folklore Museum, the Gozo Archaeology Museum, the Old Prison, and the Natural Science Museum. |
