The Girgenti Country walk
From Girgenti to Il-Maqluba, beautiful scenery and a tranquil atmosphere
The Girgenti Country walk is a walk that takes you to green lush areas and historical sites with a lot to discover and explore. The Girgenti Country walk starts off in the south-west of Malta close to Dingli by the entrance of Buskett.
The walk does not take you through woodland of Buskett, however, before you start the walk you can take some time to discover the greenery and nature of the 16th century Buskett. Here you will find lemon trees, pine trees, small winding paths and much more. As you start the Girgenti Country Walk you will pass by the prehistoric Clapham Junction cart ruts, whose purpose are still a mystery.
Don’t forget to bring your camera along as later on you will also pass by the complex and unique cave-settlement of Għar il-Kbir which was inhabited up to 1830s and lies on high ground at an altitude of ca. 750 feet above sea level. If you explore these caves you will discover that Għar il-Kbir actually is made up of eight partly natural, partly rock-cut caves spread over two levels. As you keep walking you will arrive to Laferla Cross on a hill from where you have very nice views of the tranquil countryside. The Girgenti Country walk then continues to the villages of Siggiewi and Qrendi which have nice churches, chapels and a lovely town square. As you do the last part of the walk you will arrive at Il-Maqluba which is a crater/hole in the ground with several enduring legends and folklore stories.
The Girgenti country walk will take more or less 4.5-5 hours to complete and is 12.5km long. Include more time if you intend to visit Buskett.
