Visit the St Thomas Tower and see the place where bloody battles took place
St. Thomas Tower in South Malta is a fortification that was built by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt in 1614. St Thomas Tower is one of the five remaining Wigancourt towers built to protect vulnerable sections of the Maltese coast from attacks, that is the Marsaskala Creek and St Thomas Bay.
As St Thomas Tower formed part of important strong-points in a part of its protection it was more than just a watchtowers. To make St Thomas Tower a stronger and more powerful fortification the later tenure of the Knights of Malta added a battery on the part of the tower facing the sea. This made landing of troops on the shelterd beaches more difficult. The large tower now contains one high storey what is divided into two big halls that are 18m high. It also has one bastion in every corner and a wide ditch runs all round the tower.
St Thomas tower has been repined several times over the years and is now in a very good condition. The tower is large and very interesting to visit due to its long and interesting history. The tower is named after the chapel of St Thomas that used to stand at the bay with the same name.
