Fort Chambray
Fort Chambray, the town that never becameThe Knights wanted to build a new city to replace the Citadel in Victoria, assuming that such city would further protect Gozo and increase commerce between the Malta and Gozo. The project was shelved for several years due to a lack of finances, until Bailiff Jacques Francois de Chambray personally funded the construction that took around 11 years. Although it was ready to receive new residents, the fortress never really took off as a town as people no longer feared sea attacks. Soon after, the significance of The Fort faded; it was deserted for a number of years until World War I when British soldiers were stationed there. Later on, the Fort was used as a mental institution until the Government allocate the premises for tourism purposes. The Fort is currently being converted into a tourist resort. |
