Regatta held at the Grand Harbour last weekend

National boat race held on the 31st of March

The regatta was a well-awaited event that happened in the Grand Harbour on the 31st of March, 2012. This day is a national holiday in Malta, commemorating the withdrawal of the British troops and the Royal Navy from the islands. After the ceremonial activities held at the War Memorial in Floriana; in the afternoon, the traditional regatta took place in the Grand harbour. 

Marsa and Senglea win this national boat race

In this year’s edition, Marsa and Senglea were declared as joint-winners of the Freedom Day’s regatta after they both finished with the same amount of points at the top of the Open category after the final race. The regatta turned out to be an exciting one with Cospicua, Senglea and Marsa all competing for the first places before the last and final race open for "Dgħajjes tal-Pass b'Erba Mqadef". Here, Marsa’s team overtook Senglea, ending up in first place, enjoying 58 points; the same as the yellow red team of Senglea. Cospicua, who topped the teams before the final race, settled for third place with 56 points.In category ‘B’, Senglea were the obvious winners after dominating the other teams, finishing the races at 68 points, leading ahead of Kalkara with 32 points and Vittoriosa with 30 points. 

Regatta organized twice yearly in the Grand Harbour

The regatta, or national boat race is very popular especially with the towns surrounding the Grand Harbour, and many enthusiasts are practicing their boating skills throughout the year. It is held twice annually, on the 31st of March and on the 21st of September. While we would like to congratulate the winners, we’re looking forward for the next edition at the end of summer.
