Mellieha Nights 2011
A night of festive celebrations
The Mellieha nights were organized over three evenings between the 9th and 11th of September, 2011. This picturesque town in the north of Malta was flourishing with activity as crowds of locals and artists were attracted to this event that brought together a variety of traditions, art, culture and folklore.
Some important tourist attractions were open for viewings, such as the World War II shelters and the popular Mellieha sanctuary. This impressive shrine from the 16th century is one of Mellieha’s treasures particularly because it was blessed by Pope John Paul II in his visit during May, 1990.
Throughout the three evenings of the event, painters, sculptors, filigree artists, craftsmen, soap makers and many other talented individuals did not only exhibit their work, but they were also creating art in front of the public, giving an idea of how their particular trade is mastered.
All three evenings were accompanied by live entertainment from singers, bands and choir groups. The highlight was the presence of a Beatles tribute band on the opening night, who entertained the public with many popular hits from the British legendary group.
There was also a very interesting offroading show, where 4x4 vehicles drove in impossible conditions on a purposely made track in the centre of town. Traditional food and wine were also available from a number of stalls surrounding the main square. The Maltese ftira filled with delicious pork cooked on the spit was probably the most popular dish during the event.
The Mellieha Nights are organized yearly by the Mellieha Local Council.
