Birgu by Candlelight 2011
History, culture, art and a lot of candles
Birgu by Candlelight is an annual festival that is organized by the Birgu Local Council held as part of the weekend-long event, Birgufest. In 2011, Birgu by Candlelight was held on the 8th of October, in a pretty windy and cold evening. All the lights of the city were switched off, and tens of thousands of little candles were lit to create an incredible romantic atmosphere.
Birgu, also, known as Vittoriosa, is one of the famous Three Cities of Malta; a city full of interesting history and rich heritage. This cultural heritage was showed off during Birgu by Candlelight, as many museums and palaces in the city were open to the public for free or a small fee. Visitors could embark on guided tours around the city and discover the hidden and interesting features of this beautiful old city.
Scattered all around the city there were stalls displaying local crafts and art, as well as live entertainment from local artists. Food and wine were obviously present, adding to the romantic atmosphere of the city lit by candles. All of this culture and entertainment attracted thousands of locals and tourists who travelled eagerly to Vittoriosa to enjoy the tranquil and beautiful setting with beautiful views of the Grand Harbour.
