2011 Gudja 8 km Race
Jonathan Balzan and Marisa Muscat, winners of the 2011 Gudja 8 km race
On Sunday 9th October 2011 another edition of the popular Gudja 8 km running race was held in the small village of Gudja. Plenty of runners lined up outside the St. Patrick's AC's clubhouse for this fast race at 8:30 in the morning. Due to reconstruction works being carried out on Vjal il-Kunsill ta’ l-Ewropa, the route was slightly changed, however, this was no problem for the experienced runners.
As the starting gun went off, Jonathan Balzan quickly took the lead of the pack and finished winning the 8 km race in only 26:31 minutes. Calculating his time, Jonathan ran an impressive 3:19 per km. The second runner to cross the finish-line was Johann Galea running for Pembroke Athleta with a time of 28:03 and merely 2 seconds after, Clive Gerada crossed the finish-line.
We would also like to congratulate the first female winner Marisa Muscat with the fast time of 33:10 beating last year’s winner Joelle Cortis with the time of 32.38. The second female winner was Annelise Pullicino with 37:39 and Monica Piscopo third in 40:05.
Shortly after the start of this 8km race, the shorter 2 km junior race took off. Their route was marshalled by volunteers as well as by scouts from the San Gwann group who also cheered the runners.
Prizes were handed out for the first three male and female winners in the 8 km race and to the top three winners in the junior race. Well done everyone!
