Gharb

A small village located on top of the highest hill in Gozo

Għarb is a small town located in the North-west part of Gozo. Being located on the highest hill on the island, surrounded by Gozo’s most scenic countryside, and having a population of a mere  1,600 people it remains a peaceful village till this very day. Gharb became a small hamlet many centuries ago and became a parish in 1679. The ancient roots of this village can be seen in the core, as many houses have stone balconies which are elaborately decorated.

Gharb's parish church was built between 1699 and 1729, having an extremely elegant façade on a baroque style that has been likened to Francesco Borromini's Church of Saint Agnes in Piazza Navona, Rome. The church is dedicated to the visitation of Saint Mary to her cousin Saint Elizabeth. Gharb’s village square is a typical tranquil scene of Gozitan landscape, and so it became a view in many postcards and photographs.

What to see & do in Gharb:

Gharb Folklore Museum: In the main square, you can find an extremely interesting museum housing different memorabilia that narrate the Islands' rural history.

Ta’ Dbiegi crafts village: This is a centre for Gozitan arts and crafts where you can watch artists work their Gozo lace, glass blowing, filigree and so on, as well as buy some beautiful hand-made gifts for your loved ones.

The Chapel of San Dimitri: This chapel is found in the limits of Gharb. According to legend, this chapel built on the cliff side by a woman whose son was freed from captivity by St. Demetrius.

Ta’ Pinu Basilica: This important shrine is also located in the vicinity of Gharb. In 1883, a local woman heard the voice of the Virgin and since then, the site has been a place of pilgrimages, attracting several crowds annually.
