Wignacourt Museum
The Wignacourt museum displays several collections of art and sculptures important to Maltese historyThe Wignacourt Museum is a very interesting museum located in Rabat that was open in 1981 and spreads over three floors. The ground floor hosts several exhibitions with works from both local and foreign artists throughout the whole year. The main floor on the other hand has a collection of Punic-Roman artefacts as well as items including ceramics and pottery, coins and medals, maps, rare books, religious vestments, portraits and sculptures. The Treasurer’s room is one of the highlights in the Wignacourt Museum where the treasurer slept and from where he could safely guard the chest placed on the loft above the bed. The underground level of the museum is a World War II air raid shelter set in a 2000 year old Christian and Punic Roman catacombs with 44 rooms that is linked to St Paul's church by a tunnel. The Wignacourt Museum in Rabat has been listed as “A Grade one Building” by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) for the museums historical and architectural importance. |
