Malta has more to offer than simply sun and sea, and walking around the island is a very rewarding experience. Unfortunately, the many beautiful country walks are usually overlooked by guidebooks.
Walking allows you to discover magnificent places that you would not be able to see otherwise, in fact, this is the only way to discover Comino from land, and many other areas off the beaten track. You will find countless country walks in Malta, Gozo and Comino offering different scenery, both longer and shorter walks for all levels.
All you need is a good pair of shoes and you can explore the hidden and secluded areas around the islands. Passionate walkers can enjoy the stunning views of the Mediterranean, explore hidden cliffs, caves, valleys such as the fantastic Ghasri Valley, hidden beaches, wayside chapels, old forts and some of the prehistoric sites.
A huge variety of landscapes
Even though the Maltese Islands are quite small, there is a variety of landscapes such as limestone, rocky, hillsides covered in clay, valleys with small water channels during rain periods and steep sea cliffs.
The best times to do country walks in the Maltese Islands are from mid-November to mid-May as the landscape is green and lush.
The landscape is full of life and you will encounter wild flowers such as wild iris, myrtle and Maltese rock-centaury, agricultural fields, pine trees, esparto grass, small boulders, tree spurge and much more! Make sure that you have plenty of time to explore and don’t forget to bring your camera along!
Beware of summer heat
If you are visiting Malta in summer and would like to go country waking, early morning or evening walks are recommended due to the hot climate. Make sure that you bring plenty of water along.
