Church of Our Lady of Victory
The Church of Our Lady of Victory is first building in VallettaThe Church of Our Lady of Victory is considered to be the first building completed in Valletta by the Order of St. John. In fact, the site holds the first stone of the city, laid on the 28th of March, 1566. The name was suitably selected to honour Malta’s victory during the Great Siege of 1565. Works began in 1567, and the church served as the first church of the Order in Valletta until 1577, when the Conventual Church of St. John was construction. Grandmaster Jean Parisot De La Vallette was initially buried in this church, but his remains were moved to St. John’s Co-cathedral on its completion. |
