The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Bormla is a place of worship connected to a miracleThe church of the Immaculate Conception is the main monument in Cospicua (Bormla). It is highly regarded since it unbelievably survived the bombing of World War II which flattened the rest of the town. Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is abundantly rich with superb work of art; of special mention is the painting above the high altar of The Madonna and Child, by the 17th century painter Polidoro Veneziano of Abruzzo. The original church dates back to 1584, but this was enlarged in 1637 and again a bit later until it was consecrated in 1732. Pope Pius VII gave the Church a Collegiate status in 1828. It is said that the wood sculpture of the Immaculate Conception dates back to 1689 and was carved in wood by Sr. Maria De Domenicis, a Carmelite nun. |
