Currency and Banks

Malta has been part of the Euro zone, since 2008 and changed from Maltese Liri to the Euro at that time. For up to date currency rates, please check our exchange rates page.

Visitors to Malta will note a large selection of banks with ATM machines that accept most international credit and debit cards. The main institutions are Bank of Valletta (BoV), HSBC, and APS Bank. Their ATM’s are located in most tourist or popular areas including hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs. Within the main branches foreign exchange is available over the counter, and all the major travellers’ cheques are accepted. Most banks open early in the morning and close early afternoon, some are open Saturday mornings. Please verify locally as to opening times.

Most outlets have the facility to accept credit cards, with chip and pin recently introduced, most have the facility to pay in this way. Normal charges are applicable in this case. Some outlets allow payment to be made in foreign currency, we advise the visitor to check on exchange rates before doing so.

The airport offers a 24hr foreign exchange teller.
